Fishermen’s Delight-Barramundi Fishing in Australia

Barramundi
Australia is fishermen’s delight and fishing Barramundi is one of the favorite past time of Australian fishermen. Barramundi is the most sought after trophy fish that keeps fighting till the end.

You can see the fish alongside your boat when you are on Exmouth fishing trip with its beautiful scales glowing in the Australian sun. The country has a reputation of having some of the biggest Barramundi in the entire world.

Barra (nick name for Barramundi) is one of the most hard to pin down sports fish for an angler but once hooked it is a terrific eating fish. Lates Calcarifer more commonly known as barra has other names too like the giant perch or palmer perch.

The barra holds an interesting story as they all start their life cycle as males and it takes them around three to four years to mature. They require brackish or salt water to change their gender and at around the age of fie the male barra changes the gender and becomes a female. These females lay eggs and under the right circumstances they hatch within 20 hours and grow rapidly. They can grow up to 1.8 meters and weigh up to 60 kilograms. If you catch a fish that is over 80 cm in size it is most likely to be a female.

The legal catch size of a barra is more than 55 cms in most states and if a fish is less than 55 cms in length and over 80 cms it must be released.
